British Handball Super Cup 2022

The Scottish Handball Association (SHA), England Handball Association (EHA) and British Handball Association (BHA) are proud to announce that Scotland will host the ‘British Handball Super Cup’ for the next three years, starting in May 2022.

The 2022 British Handball Super Cup will be played over the weekend of Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May in Edinburgh at Oriam, Scotland’s Sports Performance Centre. Replacing the ‘British Handball Playoffs’, the British Handball Super Cup consists of a women’s competition and men’s competition, each featuring four teams: the top two teams from the Scottish National League and top two from the English Premier League.

Teams will then battle it out to decide who will be crowned British Champions and who will represent Great Britain in the Men’s and Women’s EHF European Cup the following season with the top three in each qualifying through. The British Handball Super Cup also represents a chance to shine a spotlight on the very best British clubs while celebrating the culture of handball in Britain and providing an opportunity for all of those involved – volunteers, coaches, referees, officials, players and fans – to join together.

This year’s edition of the British Handball Super Cup will also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Scottish Handball Association, after it was created in 1972.

Paul Bray, Chair – British Handball Association said:

“We are pleased to see the play-offs return after two Covid-affected seasons and delighted to be back at Oriam after agreeing with the SHA and EHA that Scottish Handball will host the even for the next three seasons. The British Handball Super Cup is an opportunity to showcase the best of the British club scene, while the places at stake in the European Cup competition provide a further pathway to represent British handball on the European stage.

We very much value our relationship with the EHA and SHA and this event is a great demonstration of our three communities coming together to deliver the best of British Handball. I, on behalf of everyone at British Handball would also like to wish Scottish Handball a happy 50th anniversary and much success for the future, as they build on the excellent development work they have undertaken.”

Stevie Neilson, Chief Operating Officer – Scottish Handball Association said:

“We are delighted to host the British Handball Super Cup for the next three years which is a great opportunity to raise the profile of handball in Scotland. Everyone at Scottish Handball is working hard to develop grassroots handball and the British Handball Super Cup – the top club event in Great Britain – not only gives a chance for our young players to be inspired by seeing our best athletes performing up close in a fantastic environment, but will further develop our partnership with Oriam.

We have a close working relationship with the both British Handball and England Handball which helps build the significance of the event. The event itself, plus playing in front of a home crowd will really motivate our Scottish clubs to use this very competitive event as a springboard in to Europe.”

Mike Bain, Chief Executive – England Handball Association said:

"The British Handball Super Cup is a fantastic competition for handball teams in England, offering a pathway to compete against some of the top sides in Europe. We've been working closely with our friends at British Handball and Scottish Handball on the new three-year format, which we believe will allow us to further grow the sport across Great Britain.

Each country will now have the opportunity to build on the success of the event over a three-year period, driving even greater awareness of handball, whilst also opening up exciting new commercial opportunities for our sport. We're already looking forward to this year's competition and seeing some of the best players in Great Britain battle it out for a place in Europe."
